The National Institutes of Health (NIH) sponsors five Loan Repayment Programs; clinical research, clinical research for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, contraception and infertility research, health disparities, and pediatric research. Through these programs, the NIH repays up to $35,000 of education debt of those pursuing careers in biomedical and behavioral research.

The Illinois National Health Service Corps State Loan Repayment Program was established to assist communities in recruiting health professionals. Program funds are used to repay educational loans incurred by physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurse midwives, dentists and psychiatrists who agree to serve in federally designated health professional shortage areas (HPSA) in Illinois. Maximum Repayment Amount: Up to $120,000
